How to Keep Your Pets Cool in British Summers
The unpredictability of British summers can be challenging. But while we often adapt to the sun's whims, our pets might struggle more in the heat. With both International Cat Day and International Dog Day this month, it’s an opportune time to discuss pet safety during hot spells.
Expert Tips to Protect Your Pets in the Heat
Water
Hydration is crucial. Increase the number of water bowls around your home in summer. All pets, from cats to guinea pigs, benefit from fresh water with a sprinkle of ice. Consider crafting water ice lollies as an extra treat.
Shade
For pets that adore the outdoors, ensure they have access to shade. Plan walks during cooler parts of the day. Caged animals should be placed in cooler spots or taken indoors. Indoor creatures, like fish and birds, also need shade, so adjust their living spaces accordingly.
Sun Cream
Some exposed pet areas, such as ear tips or noses, need sun cream. Always opt for pet-safe brands.
Cool Mats and Towels
Offer your pets relief from the heat with cool mats or damp towels.
Key Dos and Don'ts
- NEVER leave pets in hot cars. Even with a cracked window, the heat can be lethal.
- Limit exercise during peak heat hours.
- Test pavements before dog walks. If it's too hot for your hand, it’s unsafe for paws.
- Stay alert for heatstroke symptoms, like rapid breathing or a dark tongue.
